Daily Graphs® Custom Screen Wizard

The Custom Screen Wizard allows you to search the O'Neil Database® for stocks that meet specific criteria you designate. This powerful tool provides an efficient, time saving method for finding new trading ideas as well as allows you to screen on current market and ratings information.

To launch the Custom Screen Wizard, log into www.dailygraphs.com and click the Custom Screens link at the top of the page. A new window will open and the Custom Screens interface will appear. To begin entering criteria for a new screen, click the "Create a New Screen" button.

The screening criteria are grouped into eight categories of related items:

  • IBD SmartSelect® Ratings: Includes the proprietary ratings generated within the O'Neil Database® that are only available in Daily Graphs products, Investor's Business Daily newspaper and website, and the William O'Neil + Company institutional products.
  • Earnings: Includes criteria on quarterly and annual earnings performance.
  • Sales: Includes criteria on quarterly and annual sales performance.
  • Industry & Sector: Provides criteria on the 197 industry groups and 33 broad sectors.
  • Shares & Holdings: Includes items such as Market Cap, Sponsorship Rating and the % of shares owned by mutual funds.
  • Price & Volume: Includes Current Price in Relation to 52-Week High as well as other volume, moving average and price performance items.
  • Margins & Ratios: Includes a variety of items including Profit Margins, ROE and current yield.
  • General: Includes items such as if the stock has options or if the company has had a new CEO in the last 12 months.

Note the light bulb icons to the right side of the interface. When clicked, these fill in suggested parameters as to the range of the fields. These suggestions correlate to William O'Neil's CAN SLIM principles and can provide a good starting point for further analysis. For example, clicking the light bulb for the Earnings Per Share Rating fills in "From 80 to 99" in the EPS Rating fields. To illustrate exactly how the screening process works, run the screen with just the EPS criteria by clicking the Run Wizard button. This sends the request to our servers and in a few seconds, the database is searched and the stocks matching the specified criteria are returned. The results for this screen include all the stocks in the database that have an EPS Rating of 80 to 99. As further criteria are added, the number of stocks in the results will decrease. For example, click the light bulb icon to add Relative Strength Rating from 80 to 99 and run the screen again. The results of this screen now features a lower number of stocks because less stocks meet BOTH the EPS and RS parameters entered. As further criteria are added, the resulting list of stocks will become smaller and smaller. If a screen is run and zero stocks are returned, it simply means the parameters entered were too stringent. Modify or eliminate some of the criteria to widen the search. A useful method is to add or change criteria one item at a time and then run the Wizard to view the results. This allows you to see how changes affect the total number of stocks found and provides valuable insight allowing you to create more effective screens.

Here are two sample screens that you can create on your own. Setting up these screens will give you a good idea as to how to program the Custom Screen Wizard and should also give you some ideas as to the potential within the Wizard.

Example #1 - Based on the "Stocks On The Move" feature on the Investor's Business Daily website.

The "Stocks On The Move" feature on www.investors.com shows stocks trading higher or lower on large volume increases, which can be a sign of institutional investors at work. The seven stocks on top of this feature are all up in price with trading volume at unusually high levels. With the Custom Screen Wizard, a similar screen can be created that results in a larger list of stocks to investigate before they may appear on the table at investors.com.

First, in the SmartSelect Ratings category, enter criteria to screen for stocks with an Earnings Per Share Rating and a Relative Strength Rating of at least 80. Next, enter parameters for the Accumulation/Distribution Rating of A, B and C. This will exclude stocks trending down in price on substantial volume (i.e. Accumulation/Distribution Rating of D and E).

Now, move onto the Price & Volume tab and set minimum price and volume parameters. For the minimum current price, enter 15 per share. For the Current 50-Day Average Volume enter a minimum 100,000 shares.

Finally, set a minimum volume percentage change. On the Price & Volume section, go to the "% Increase in Current Day's Volume vs. 50-Day Average Volume." Here, enter 50 into the "from" box to screen for stocks that are showing a minimum 50% rise in volume. This item can be useful in spotting volume surges that may indicate institutional buying or selling.

To run this screen, click the RUN WIZARD button and the Custom Screen Wizard will access the O'Neil Database® and search for the companies that meet the specified criteria.

There are some choices on how to view the results. Try sorting first by price change in descending order. To do so, select Price Change from the drop down menu and then click the selection for Descending Order. Now, click Display Results to see the list of companies. Stocks that traded higher in price will be shown first at the top of the list.

The Results Page lists the stocks that met the selected criteria and shows the following data for each stock:

  • Symbol
  • Company Name
  • Price
  • Price Change
  • Volume (shown in 100s)
  • Volume Percentage Change vs. 50-Day Average Volume
  • Earnings Per Share (EPS) Rating
  • Relative Price Strength (RS) Rating
  • Industry Group Relative Strength (Grp RS) Rating
  • Sales + Profit Margins + ROE (SMR) Rating
  • Accumulation/ Distribution (Acc/Dis) Rating
  • IBD SmartSelect® Composite Rating

This screen filtered through all stocks in the database and came up with a manageable list of stocks presented in an easy to read table where further analysis may begin.

Now save this screen by clicking the "Save Screen" button. You'll be asked to select a name for your screen. This example can be named "Intraday Volume Surges". Click the Save Screen button again to save the screen.

Up to 10 Custom Screens may be saved to run or modify at a later time. These saved screens may be accessed on the home page of the Custom Screen Wizard and you may review the parameters of a screen by clicking its name. Links for running, modifying and deleting saved screens are located to the right of each screen name on the homepage.

Example #2 - Focus on higher rated stocks that are close to or at their 52-week price highs.

In the SmartSelect Ratings area of the interface, set the EPS and RS Rating fields to screen for a minimum of 85.

In the Price and Volume section, set the minimum price at $10 per share and the minimum Current 50-Day Average Volume at 100,000 shares. Clicking on the light bulb here will plug in the recommended criteria for the "Current Price in Relation to 52-Week High". This criteria will screen for stocks at or within 15% of a 52-week high.

Click the Run Wizard button to run the screen. To view the list of the stocks found, click Display Results.

The resulting list of stocks have high EPS and RS Ratings, are priced above $10 per share and are trading at or within 15% of their 52-week highs. This page has a built in a function that allows you to sort the results by simply clicking on the column title. For example, if the "Grp RS Rtg" title is clicked, the list resorts so that the stocks with the highest Group RS Rating are first.

Note: There is a powerful feature available for subscribers of the Custom Screen Wizard and Stock Graphs; clicking on the symbol opens a Daily Graphs Online chart for that stock. The Custom Screen Wizard and Stock Graph windows can be adjusted to enhance the navigation between the results of your screen and individual stock charts. This is an efficient method for finding stocks that meet your criteria and directly viewing the charts without having to type individual stock symbols.

Save this screen by clicking the "Save Screen" button and name it "Daily Review".

As you can see, the Custom Screen Wizard provides a means of quickly filtering through the immense amount of information within the O'Neil Database® to find stocks with certain characteristics. By using this powerful tool, you can use your time more efficiently and focus in on those stocks that meet the specific characteristics you value.
